iMessage syncing problems

If you have downloaded iOS 5 onto both your iPhone and iPad and begin to use iMessage you will notice that some messages don't sync. I have no idea why it doesn't work properly but I can explain what is happening.

You will notice that when you send an iMessage to an email address to will since to both your iPad and iPhone or iPod touch.

However when it come to cellphone numbers it gets confusing.

If you send an iMessage to someone's cellphone number from either your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch it will sync across all your devices. But if someone sends you and iMessage to your cellphone number it will NOT sync across all your deceives.

I hope Apple will fix this in a future update.

Something I have also noticed is that in order to send an iMessage from your iPad or iPod touch to a cell number the number will have to have the country code at the beginning.

If you still have problems let me know and I will try and help!

Hope it helped! Actually see some that iMessage has some security because you give people your email and not your cell number. Sort of like BBM

My iPhone and iPad WERE not sync'ing together...... It was a simple fix...

Settings.... General......reset....... Reset network settings.

Do this to both iPad and iPhone.... Allow each to reboot. Make sure you are connected to wifi or 3G on each device and you will see your messages on both devices... It's awesome!

Thanks for the post JG.
Have you got a 3G iPad with a sim linked to your phone?

Wifi only iPads cannot resent network setting as they are not connected to a network!

Michael Roberts,

i have a WiFi only iPad and it can reset the network settings, he didnt mean Cellular Network, he meant Settings->Reset->Reset Network Settings

after i did that on both iPad and iPhone, iMsg now syncs my chat, even when i send to a phone number! :D

Thank for that mex.

I tried the same thing without result.

iMessage will sync on both your devices if you send messages to a number but on the receiving end it will only be received on the phone but if you use an email address it will sync on both ends!

Genius. It does not work on old messages but does for new ones. Apple should be telling people about this as I was very frustrated last night that a key feature was not working.

I live in the US and my friend lives in Canada and I can only send iMessage to her email. She has an iPhone 4 and can only send iMessages from her email that's associated with her iTunes account. Is there any fix for this? She has iMessage enabled and in settling she can only add another email address to receive iMessage and not her phone number. On my phone I have my phone number as my "caller ID" in settling. Thanks

Hey all,

Check out this thread:

Explains what's going on a little bit better.

I believe resetting the network settings has no effect in the syncing of messages. From testing it both on the ipad and iphone the reason why messages don't sync could be related to your caller ID settings. As we all know the iphone's iMessage is activated with your Apple ID although it also assigns your phone number along with your desired email addresses.

On the iPad it only allows your desired email address. SO.... when you set your iPhone's caller ID to your phone number and send out messages. Then your iPad does not sync with these messages. from my testing nothing ocmes up on the iPad but the moment I change the caller ID back to my mail address then it starts to sync messages with my iPad.

This is just my own testing so far and wanted to know if this is true from others. If this is the case then it is a major flaw in iMessage. If iMessage can't assign the phone number back to the Apple ID then iMessage would not be useful for multiple iOS device owners.

The other issue I have is that the ability to view other activated/registered users. You only find out if they have iMessage if you find them from the contact list, select the contact then it does a search which informs you whether they have iMessage. The only reason such IM or messaging services are so popular is because of the fact you have the ability to see whether they are activated with the service or online. This is the catalyst for such growth and I feel the painful understanding of imessage will deter many users. If this service was purely for iPhone then it wouldn't be much of a problem....

@add. As I said in the post, if you are sending messages to cell number you have to ensure that it has the international code before the number. I have chosen to you my email to avoid this problem. Which mades me wonder if my cell number will one day become obsolete.

@Brad. Thanks for the post. Once you have sent someone an iMessage it will show a blue speach bible next that contact for future reference.

I am sure that apple will keep updating iMessage and it will get rid of all these issues and preferences!

When I send someone an imessage, there name is removed from the message screen and only there number is shown
, which is going to get confusing quickly! Anyone else had this issue?

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAllan

When I send or received a imessage it changes the name for the number with +1 in the beggining, it does not recogniced the contact that is sending the imessage.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterClaudia

Thanks Claudia. As I said in the post make sure your contacts have the international dialing code otherwise I message will do this and will also be unable to iMessage a number from an iPad!

This Imessaging has been nothing but hell for me. I currently can only receive imessage messages but i cannot receive non iphone SMS. And under settings, my immessage notification is saying that it is trying to verify my cell number, not my email, but my cell number. Can anyone help?

The problem I am having is on the receiving end. My friend has an iphone and and ipad and when he sends me a message from his phone it shows up in the normal conversation as the texts used to be, but when he uses his ipad it creates a whole new conversation under his apple id. So I have to keep switching in between conversations depending on what he uses to message me. On his end though his conversations are synced up and show up the same on his iphone and ipad.

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbrendan

Thanks Brendan.

That is because when he sends from his iPhone it uses his cell number and from his iPad it uses his email. He must change his caller ID in message settings to his email address!

His iPad will sync with the iPhone with messages you send to his email but to his number will not sync!

October 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMichael Robert

I have iphone and ipad both running iOS5 and iphone is configured to received text at both my email address and phone#.

Have verfied that only way to sync incoming txt across both device is for sender to send it to my email ID NOT my iphone phone#.

Hope Apple did not intentionally design this inconvenience and fix this bug soon! arghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reset Network Settings actually worked for me. My iPhone4 and iPad weren't in sync for iMessages. I tried the 'fix' mentioned above and the phone is now in sync with the iPad. Cheers all.
